UX and Interaction Design
In the last few years, I expanded my knowledge and expertise in interactive design. I was able to apply my attention to detail learned from my print experience. I served as Senior Production Designer, UX designer, and content designer for apps and websites via Chaotic Moon and Fjord Austin.
Here’s the public-facing work I was involved with.
Some NDA-sensitive work is available, albeit hidden behind a password. Holler if you would like to talk about it.
Subway
needed to keep up with the fast food industry and surpass it. They wanted native apps (iOS and Android) for ordering and managing their loyalty program that was in-line with their new branding and matched the tone of their marketing. We kept it fun, easy, and memorable, while keeping it on-brand. Using an extra helping of motion and Easter egg copy, we encouraged users to explore and experiment.
My responsibilities were to manage a team of production designers while implementing a new workflow and new design software (Sketch) and convert our annotation and deliverables to an all-digital system (Zeplin). We manages all assets, cleaned up screens for development, and assisted in UI and icon design. I even served up a side of sandwich-heavy puns for content and a few Easter eggs for users to discover. See the Design System Management section for a bit more detail about this project.
Motogadget is a hardware
company out of Germany that produces vehicle-specific electric parts, including the m.Unit Blue – a bluetooth-connected electrics control system that replaces the fusebox and relays in older motorcycles and cars. Because of the m.Unit Blue’s ability to communicate with a smartphone, m.Ride offers opportunities to increase rider safety and diagnosis of motorcycle systems and status. This project was a personal proof-of-concept exercise to expand my skillsets in UX, UI and content design, while experimenting using Sketch libraries to design a complete and viable app.
The existing m.Ride app can be used to schedule maintenance, monitor electrical systems and diagnose errors in the system. I felt that Motogadget missed a lot of potential for the app by underutilizing GPS in the paired smartphone. I also thought this would be a good opportunity to use ADA guidelines to improve legibility and reduce operator distraction.
In designing the app, I created an app map, wires, and screens, focusing on three tenets:
The app must increase rider safety above any other features.
The app must be ADA compliant (to improve legibility in changing light conditions, vibration, and through tinted visors and goggles).
The App must expand the Motogadget brand ecosystem by replacing competing apps (GPS speedometers and social network communication) with Motogadget-branded features.
Pre-existing features
All preset controls via bluetooth interfaceˇ
Monitoring of all electric systems’ stats and historiesˇ
Alarm and alarm monitoring and pin maps
Bike maintenance scheduling (dependent on using a hard-wired speed sensor)ˇ
Proximity-sensor keyless ignition
Log book with notes
Last trip logs with stats (corners, top speed, fun factor rating)
ˇ Improved UX
Added features / UX
ADA-compliant Vehicle Dashboard with customizable Speedometer, navigation cues, signal and lights indicators, and fuel warning.
Crash detection via synced XYZ phone and m-Unit sensors and GPS with auto 911 calling and rider data.
Auto on/off headlights with dimming.
Route planning (navigation) and sharing via social contacts
Social groups with route sharing, bike specs, and messaging
Improved ADA-compliant interface throughout
Separate Engine On/Engine Off modes to promote safety
Large clickable areas for use with gloves
Predictive/Navigation controlled turn signals
Improved UX flow
Safety features
The app has two distinct modes: Idle and Riding
In Riding Mode, the app has limited features to decrease operator distractions. Vehicle Dashboard and navigation cues are available when the engine is running. Crash detection and fuel warnings are available.
In Idle Mode, the app offers all screens and features.
Additional Features (not listed above)
Nav-triggered automatic turn signals.
Passing horn/headlight with one button double tap.
Fuel warning with nearest-fuel auto navigation
Diagnostics history with shock and fault sensing
Auto headlight dimming via phone camera light sensing
UNION
is a high-volume bar and restaurant tab management system with a mobile app and PC-Based management Dashboard.
The Brief:
Our dream is to usher in a world without paper or plastic in the hospitality industry. For this to happen, we need to create a major shift in how customers interact with businesses.
The Assignment:
Create a basic user flow that outlines the footprint of a user moving through a bar without a credit card, as well as the bartender’s point of view…
This is what I was able to produce on short notice with a 24-hour turnaround.
Velux
asked us to find a way to let homeowners see how daylight could change their home environment and truly enhance their overall wellbeing. A team of more than 40 designers, developers and cloud architects from Fjord and Accenture designed and implemented a service that uses Virtual Reality to give customers a real representation of how daylight could enrich and improve their homes. By creating the MyDaylight app, we have built a deep understanding of what it takes to design and deliver a complex 360° 3D and VR experience.
The MyDaylight app offers homeowners the ability to easily create room simulations without needing to rely on architects or interior designers and see how their home could be totally transformed by daylight.
Together with VELUX, we worked especially hard to ensure that the modelling of rooms was fast and simple and the rendering was of sufficiently high fidelity to ensure a realistic visualization of how daylight would transform the space. This gives VELUX an opportunity to strengthen relationships directly with their customers, and build an ecosystem around home renovation.
My responsibilities were to quickly convert the platform-agnoistic designs to iOS- and Android-specific Sketch files, ready for the devs to get going. I was able to not-only correct the files technically-speaking, but maintain the beautiful design. I was also able to educate the design team and ensure the future designs were built correctly. And I did it in half the allotted time.
